Description:
This course will enable students to think critically about world literature outside of the Western civilization. They will become acquainted with the most important writers and works in the Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Latin American, Middle Eastern and African literary tradition, and gain knowledge about the place and importance they hold within the concept of world literature. Particular focus will be on the problems of the dissemination of the traditional (Western) literary canon, levels and types of influences, reception, translation, dynamics of the relationship between the centre and the margins, censorship, comparability and social, political and cultural conditions that control these processes.
