The aim of this course is to make students acquainted with the personality and work of Virginia Woolf. In the first part of the course, students will become familiar with the most important elements of Woolf's biography and their impact on her work, and special emphasis will be given to Hermione Lee's biography. The course will then move on to an analysis of Woolf's critical writings (this includes her essays 'On Being Ill' and A Room of One's Own), with the aim of making students aware that Woolf's critical texts define and elaborate on the main themes and methods of her major novels. The main interest of this course is in Woolf's major novels. The reading of these novels will enable students to discern Woolf's major themes and methods. |
