The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split offers a three-year doctoral program in Humanities. The degree of the Doctor of Philosophy – PhD - in Interdisciplinary Humanities is obtained upon the completion of all academic requirements and a public thesis defence.

Enrollment requires a minimum of 300 ECTS credits, with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and a knowledge of one foreign language.

This doctoral program grew out of the Studia Mediterranea Center for Interdisciplinary Research (founded in 2008), which is reflected in the program’s interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach, consisting of the intermingling of various disciplines and establishment of new research projects. The result of such methodology is greater unity of numerous study disciplines dealing with the preservation, protection and interpretation of heritage in Dalmatia, Croatia, as well as the entire Mediterranean basin.

The aim of our PhD program is to prepare the doctoral candidates for scientific and professional work in the fields of philosophy, linguistics, Croatian studies, history, art history, Italian studies, literature and culture, and interdisciplinary study of the Mediterranean culture. Our PhD program provides excellent training for work at universities and institutes, museums, galleries, research centers and other institutions dealing with the protection of culture, sector of tourism, as well as traditional and new media.

PhD candidates can choose one of the six offered modules:

History

The main purpose of the History module is to deepen the knowledge acquired in undergraduate and graduate studies in the field of global and national history, from a more particular and defined perspective, while adhering to the requirements of modern standards in research.

The module is designed in a classical way, so as to allow the PhD student to freely combine the core subjects with any of the offered electives, while considering the interdisciplinarity of the program as well as the requirements of the European ECTS system.

The main feature of this PhD module, which also makes it different from similar PhD programs in Croatia, is focus on the Adriatic and Mediterranean identity, which is especially evident in the structure of its elective courses.

Art History

Our art history module is thematically focused on the study of Dalmatia’s rich artistic heritage, and the great advantage our PhD candidates have is the proximity and accessibility of their study subject, and many institutions that grew out of the long-standing research, protection and restoration of heritage.

PhD candidates are introduced to the complexities and problems in the process of researching historical and artistic phenomena from all historical periods, with an emphasis on the Adriatic area. Our courses are taught by renowned experts in the field, many of whom are also mentors to doctoral students. A wide spectrum of courses to choose from allows the doctoral students to focus on topics relevant to the subject of their research, while applying the most up-to-date research methodologies.

Literature and Culture

Literature and Culture module prepares doctoral students for independent research in the fields of literature and culture, as well as Italian and English. In addition to core and elective courses, special emphasis is placed on research and publication of research articles in renowned journals, as well as participation in research conferences.

This module program is designed to shape highly qualified researchers and highly employable professionals, able to discern and identify cultural transformations and changes.

Linguistics

Linguistics module courses cover various linguistic disciplines thus providing our doctoral students with the option of in-depth study of literature, culture and tangible and intangible heritage in the Mediterranean context.

The interdisciplinarity of this program has resulted in high-quality Linguistics module designed for shaping future professionals who will employ their expertise in various research institutions in the fields of humanities or other public organizations requiring language skills. In addition, our module also places focus on the importance of Croatian language and national identity contained within it, in the context of various challenges posed by contemporary society.  

Philosophy

Study of various philosophical subjects in the heart of the Mediterranean, the cradle of philosophical thought, is one of the goals of our PhD program’s module of Philosophy. Philosophy, thought by many to be the ‘queen of the sciences’, ensures the refinement of critical and analytical thinking, the attainment of clarity of thought and language, the ability to synthesize information into a coherent image, and spiritual self-realization in the full sense of the word.

Based on interdisciplinary research, this module offers a wide range of philosophical topics (from ancient to contemporary), from different philosophical branches (history of philosophy, ethics (bioethics), logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, political philosophy, philosophy of education), with special emphasis on the Mediterranean philosophical tradition and the Mediterranean aspect of philosophical thought which is, given the geopolitical and cultural turmoil in the Mediterranean, today more relevant than ever.  

Mediterranean Cultural Studies

The Mediterranean Sea, a birthplace of the ​​Western civilization, in the broadest and most dynamic sense, is today more than ever an area characterized by social turmoil and scientific dynamics to be noted.

This module equips doctoral candidates with knowledge and skills so they are able to identify contemporary changes in literary genres of specific fields, Mediterranean cultural codes and coded languages ​​of social and historical turmoil. Such orientation makes our candidates highly employable professionals in the research job market. These ambitious goals require an interdisciplinary approach through a wide range of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to this region.

The central role of the Mediterranean in the creation of Europe today is very problematic, as is the presence of the Mediterranean in the formation of Croatian cultural identity. Analysis of the problematic relationship between the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe is thus also one of the goals of this module.
