Description:
The aim of the course is to offer students basic and specialist knowledge in the field of contemporary sociological theories, skills of understanding and operating the discipline, related theories, methods, and knowledge as well as to train students for practical application of the knowledge in various dimensions of contemporary sociology. During the course, the students will be introduced to the most important contemporary sociological theories, the conditions of their establishment, advantages and disadvantages, and their connection with basic sociological paradigms. The focus is on the presentation of postmodern grand theory, the theory of globalization, and contemporary integrative theories. In addition to the review and development of sociological theories, many views and works are presented, as well as theoretical contributions of the most important contemporary authors in sociology such as J. Habermas, P. Bourdieu, A. Giddens, N. Elias, M. Foucault, D. Bell, A. Touraine, J. Baudrillard, G. Lipovetsky, G. Ritzer, M. Castells, U. Beck, and Z. Baumann. The course enables students to get acquainted with these authors relying on the critical and creative thinking of modern society as a way to look at the world and to recognize that it is not possible to understand the world without a foundation in theory. One of the central contributions of this course is how to learn to think about social problems theoretically, and such looking at the world enables specific insights and posing interesting questions. Special attention will be paid to thinking about social class, gender relations, and racial and ethnic relations, within the three main characteristics of contemporary society, moral relativism, surveillance and control society, and rising consumption because social relations are central to sociological discipline and social organization. The aim of the course is to show the basic theoretical directions of the discipline development, to open a discussion on the most important authors, to provide insight into the nature and future of contemporary society, and to point out the results of research within the discipline and the contemporary status of the discipline.
