Course objectives:
Course objectives is gain knowledge regarding history of Croatian language viewed as a grammar system and history of Croatian as the language of literature.
The programme consists of two parts: the first unit embraces the study of historical grammar: historical phonology, morphology (they are studied in detail) and historical word formation and syntax (they are studied parcialy).
The second part comprises the study of evolution of the standard Croatian language and basic characteristics of standardisation processes. The course comprises periodisation of the standard Croatian into three pre-standard and three standard periods. The former is concerned with the very first records written in Croatian up to the mid-18th century, drawing attention to the line dividing the two periods, while the latter will be primarily dedicated to the written records from the mid-18th century up to the present day.
Course content:
1. Introduction: course content and proposal, studying the history of Croatian grammar (PHJ) and studying the history of Croatian as the language of literature (PHKJ); student responsibilities
2. Literary language of Croatian Middle Ages (analysis Baška tablet); periodization of the standard Croatian on three pre-standard and three standard periods
3. Historical phonology: vowel systems: Proto-Slavic, Old-Slavic and contemporary vowel system; vowel alternations; Chakavian literary language
4. Historical phonology: consonant systems: Proto-Slavic, Old-Slavic and contemporary consonant system; consonant alternations; Shtokavian literary language
5. Historical phonology: accentual systems: Proto-Slavic accentual system; Kajkavian literary language and Hybrid literary language
6. Historical phonology: accentual systems: Old-Croatian and contemporary accentual system; Literary language: synthesis
7. Historical phonology: reconstruction accentual systems; Older Croatian linguistics: dictionaries: Faust Vrančić, the first Croatian dictionary from 1595.
8. Colloquium: historical phonology; Older Croatian linguistics: dictionaries (from 17th till 19th century)
9. Historical morphology: Older Croatian linguistics: Bartol Kašić, the first Croatian grammar from 1604.
10. Historical morphology: masculine and neuter gender nouns; Older Croatian linguistics: grammars (from 17th till 19th century)
11. Historical morphology: female gender nouns; pronouns, verbs (verb form), adverbs, conjunctions, exclamations, particles; Older Croatian linguistics: dictionaries and grammars: synthesis
12. Morphologic text description; Polemics of philological schools in the 19th century (topics and dilemmas); Linguistic concepts of Illyrians
13. Colloquium: historical morphology; Linguistic conception of Rijeka, Zadar and Zagreb philological school; Linguistic conception of Croatian Vukovci
14. Historical phonology and morphology: synthesis
15. Declaration, Croatian language in the 19th and 20th centuries: synthesis.
Format of instruction: lectures, seminars and workshops.
Student responsibilities:
Students are required to:
1. Participate in the teaching process (80 % of lectures and 80 % of seminar papers)
2. Behave in accordance with ethical and scientific principles in higher education process
3. Prepare and present a seminar paper according to pre-determined criteria
4. Pass colloquia (three mid-term exams) during the teaching process
5. Participate in the workshops during classes.
Grading and evaluating student work in class and at the final exam:
In accordance with the stated learning outcomes and the obligations of
students in the course, the final assessment is based on the following
elements:
1. Passed mid-term exams: 50%
2. Written and presented seminar paper: 25%
3. Participation on workshops: 25 %
