ENGLISH LANGUAGE EXERCISES II (WRITING SKILLS)

There is a two-pronged approach to writing skills development:

1 Writing activities test accuracy rather than fluency because the written word does not tolerate error as the spoken language does. Written arguments are usually reconstructed as students speak.
Correcting students before the written word is read out to the rest of the class encourages students to have a certain confidence that what they are saying is correct English.

2 Students are also encouraged to produce a neutral style of language, unmarked for formality and appropriate in most situations. Most language is unmarked in terms of style - butter, apple, go, take, the Past Perfect etc., have no stylistic value at all.
By contrast, it is when writing that students need to be on their best linguistic behaviour. For students who need to write letters (e.g. business letters, open letters, reports, essays, papers), there are many conventions and formulae that need to be learnt. This course aims to work on these areas.
