Description:
To achieve competence to quantitatively and qualitatively determine social parameters that imply changes in language structure and explain language functions. Also, the objective is to introduce the students with sociolinguistic approach that helps understanding and solving problems in linguistic culture, multilingual environment, in language planning and language teaching.
Introduction, course content and literature. Sociolinguistics and sociology of language. Social awareness of language and social stereotypes. Language as social phenomenon. Language and social classes. Identity construction. Identity of language and linguistic identity. Language policy: languages of public communication. Social context of language policy. Vertical stratification of language and society. Urban idioms and explicit norm. Elements and models of language policy. Language planning. Standardization. Attitudes towards standard Croatian. Standard language and dialects. Bilingualism and biculturalism. Diglossia and dinomia. Language in community. Borders between languages.Language variety. Multiculturalism and multilingualism.
