Sociology of education studies social conditions and functions of education. It examines those social factors that contribute to, direct (or hinder) the development of educational activities, as well as the social organization of education, the connection of education with other components of culture and forms of cognition. During the course, students are introduced to the basic goals, concepts, development, theoretical approaches, social context, specifics of educational institutions, and the position and relationships of participants in them. We will focus on some special topics of sociology of education such as modernity, social inequalities and educational opportunities, changes in family structure and role, social change, division of labor, labor market and mobility, democratization of society, globalization, multiculturalism, transculturalism. Special attention will be paid to the elaboration of the modern consumer culture of neoliberal capitalism, i.e. global culture and globalization.
